The gala event of the year for every junior, or at least the one that we all look forward to, is the Junior Banquet, and not just because it's symbolic of the end of the school year. This is a night of no curfews, dressing up, and all-out fun with your friends. The night at Tivoli Terrace in Westbury began for all 120 attending juniors with a greeting line comprised of Carey's finest teachers and administrators, including Lorraine Wright, Diane Ondris (advisor to the Class of 1999), Jeryl Inglima and Brian Merges. The chaperones also included Fran Gillespie and Ody Svolos.

"It was a beautiful evening," said Carey student activities director Joanne Bergbom. "Everyone looked lovely."

Limousines and party vans rolled up just outside the entrance, each presenting some of the best-dressed juniors ever seen. It seems that one party van was a little overconfident on squeezing under the canopy extending over the entranceway, and smashed six or seven unsuspecting light bulbs bordering the canopy's edge.

From snazzy to cool, elegant to stylish, everyone was dressed at their best, ranging from full gowns with bows and suits with ties, to simple dresses and more casual finery. Girls with their up-do's and guys with their hair in a flammable state - everyone was well planned in their attire. Brandon Meddy came complete with white derby, and one student (who wishes to remain anonymous) even dyed his hair to match his red shirt. Other juniors attending included Frankie Farella, Kristin Stanley, Stephanie Evans, Chris Cassa, Todd Costa, and Steve Orlando and Tricia Fuschetto.

"Best night of my life," said Billy Kougells when asked about the experience. Tivoli provided the perfect atmosphere that Friday night, and thanks to the DJ, dancing was irresistible. In fact, there was a rumor that Carey principal Mr. Tom Dolan was dancing the Macarena. When asked if there was any truth to this hearsay, Mr. Dolan replied, "I deny the rumor emphatically and cite client-dancer privilege. This rumor will not hold up in the court of public opinion and besmirches my reputation and that of the solemnity of this event. Further questions should be directed to my spokesperson, junior Derek Reed," who happened to be standing nearby when Mr. Dolan was quoted.

All in all, it was a wonderful evening at Tivoli Terrace, and afterwards most juniors went clubbing in the city at The Tunnel, while some others went on a cruise. But the next morning most of the class did meet up at the beach, where the general feeling was a strong desire to go home and fall asleep.
