In the spring of 1883, a group of North German immigrants banded together and started to plan their first "Volksfest" (People's Festival). This first annual gathering would raise funds and enable them to start charitable works that would help their fellow countrymen and new Americans. Through their hard work and funds raised at subsequent Volksfests, this German American organization (Plattdeutsche Volksfest Vereen) was able to lay the cornerstone for German Hospital, in Brooklyn, NY, in June 1894. This hospital became Wyckoff Heights Hospital, which today still serves a large portion of both Kings and Queens Counties.
When these Plattdeutschers (North Germans) were confident that the hospital was running smoothly, they turned their attention and funds to establishing a home for aged on Long Island. The result was The Plattdeutsche Old Folks Home (Altenheim) which was opened in 1921. It provides a beautiful, safe home for the elderly of any nationality on Long Island. They have added a new building recently and plan to build more, due to the popularity of their Enriched Living option.
On Saturday, June 27, and Sunday, June 28, the 115th annual Volksfest will be held at Plattdeutsche Park, 1132 Hempstead Turnpike, Franklin Square, 11010 ¬ telephone number 354-3131.
The fund raising still goes on because there is so much more still to do! So, do come out and try this taste of Germany in Franklin Square. There will be plenty of bratwurst, leberkase, potato pancakes, hamburgers, beer, coffee and cake. Music will be performed during the weekend by various German bands and there will be rides for the kids. Bring the whole family, you will have a good time and you will be helping us continue our good works.
