Over 300 members of the Franklin Square Senior Center celebrated the 25th anniversary of their center with a luncheon-dinner dance on April 23 at the Chateau Briand.
The year 1973 was a very special year for Franklin Square senior citizens because it was the year that their center opened. With the opening of the center, seniors found a second home to go to. There was no longer a need for them to sit around looking at four walls and out of windows day after day wondering what to do, and when they might have visitors. The center became a warm and friendly place to go to and to find companionship with other seniors sharing similar interests when their "nests" were empty. The center became a place to meet with and socialize with new-found friends and it gave seniors the opportunity to use their special talents and leadership skills to help others. They also became members of a support group for themselves and others.
Looking back at the way it was before 1973, members can truly say that over the last 25 years their center has been the sunshine of their lives. Because of the center, members count their blessings for the fruitful, active and productive lives they now lead. The center has made their golden years better and sweeter.
Joining the center members in their celebration was Town of Hempstead Supervisor Richard Guardino, Assemblyman Thomas Alfano, Assemblywoman Maureen O'Connell, Legislator John Ciotti and TOH Councilman Joe Ra.
