Charlotte M. Popella, 78, a former Elmont Memorial High School teacher, died on March 6, 1998. Born in the Bronx, she was received her bachelor's degree form Hunter College where she was a member of the field hockey team and served as president of the Athletic Association. She received her master's degree from Columbia University Teachers College.
Mrs. Popella worked for the British Ministry of War Transport in the lend-lease program as an administrator and as a research assistant in the bomb-site division while her husband, George was in the service during WWII.
Mrs. Popella taught at Sewanhaka High School for six years and was the first chairwoman of the girls physical education department at Elmont Memorial and held the position for 20 years.
She was predeceased by her husband George W. Sr. in 1986. She is survived by her children Donald and George Jr.; and two grandchildren.
Arrangements were made by the Aycock Funeral Home, Stuart, FL. Interment Woodlawn Cemetery, N. Bronx.
Margaret L. Miller, formerly of Elmont, died on March 13, 1998. Wife of the late Herman. Mother of Kenneth, Janice and Warren Gorman, Brian and Linda, Thomas and Diane and Jane and Steven Vaughn. Grandmother of Loretta, Peter, Jessica, Brian, Michael, Samantha, Timothy, Megan, Taylor and Dylan. Arrangements were made by the Whitting Funeral Home, Glen Head. Funeral Mass at St. Brigid's RC Church. Interment Holy Rood Cemetery.
