To its long time members, a quarter century has passed virtually in the wink of the eye.
To celebrate that milestone, members of the Franklin Square Senior Center will gather for a gala, 25th anniversary celebration at the Chateau Briand Restaurant in Carle Place.
Three-hundred-and-fifty of the centers more than 1,000 members are expected to attend.
"With a membership of 1,000, we're one of the largest senior centers in the Town of Hempstead," said Lisa Wettereau, the center's coordinator.
It is also one of the busiest, its monthly calender crammed with literally dozens of events including daily classes in a variety of subjects, nutrition programs, outreach programs into the community, and even a performing arts group.
"So you can see, we're an extremely active bunch," Wettereau said. "I might add that any senior resident of Franklin Square is eligible to join. All they have to do is call 328-3010 to find out more."
"The center really does offer seniors a home away from home, where they are able to enjoy the friendship of other seniors and can take part in many stimulating activities," said Town Councilman Joseph J. Ra, a longtime booster of the Franklin Square seniors.
"My mother, Marge Ciotti, happens to be a member of the center, and I have to say that it's an important part of the community for a lot of reasons," said Nassau County Legislator John Ciotti. "First and foremost, it allows our seniors to congregate, to socialize, and affords them the opportunity to get out of the house.
"I know personally that the quality of my mother's life is substantially enhanced by knowing she has a place to go to each day, meet friends, and enjoy herself," Ciotti continued.
Anticipating the anniversary celebration, Town Supervisor Richard Guardino said of the center, which is located at 1182 Martha Place in Franklin Square, "I am pleased to recognize the accomplishments of the senior members of the center over the past quarter century, as well as the positive impact they've had on our community.
"In particular, I would like to thank senior center President Frank Arena and the all the members for their dedication and resolve in keeping the center strong and vibrant."
