Carey's Georgia Stasinos Receives Award From NOW

H. Frank Carey High School senior Georgia Stasinos was bestowed with the prestigious Young Women of Achievement Award from the Nassau County chapter of the National Organization of Women (NOW) recently. Georgia, honored with 69 other young ladies from Nassau County, received her honor at a brunch ceremony at Hofstra University's USA Club in front of 200 proud parents, friends and teachers.

"This is quite an honor for quite a young lady," said Jane Kornbluth, Carey English teacher and Georgia's sponsor for this award. "Georgia is in the vanguard of a new generation of spirited, forward-thinking young women and I, for one, could not be more proud." Georgia works with Mrs. Kornbluth in Carey's popular women's issue group.

NOW is an organization devoted to gender equity and promoting an environment where women can achieve unhindered by negative stereotypes. The Young Women of Achievement Awards, now in its second year, is designed to honor young women who have shown leadership, achievement and commitment. It also looks to recognize those who have overcome obstacles in their quest for success.

After a scrambled egg and bacon brunch, Louanne Marchand and Jane Donnelly-Schmitt, respectively vice president and former president of Nassau NOW, offered brief but thoughtful commentary on the state of gender equity. Then Jeanne Bezko, president of Nassau NOW, presented the awards. Ms. Bezko lauded each girl's estimable achievements, a powerful listing which would have been incomplete without Georgia's resume: a member of Carey's Gifted and Talented program; Model Congress; FBLA; and the women's issues group. In addition, Georgia is an editor on both the school's literary magazine, Poseidon, and the school's award winning newspaper The Carey Clipper. Georgia is also a co-founder of a popular alternative magazine.

"Their energy and dedication serve as an incentive for all of us to follow," said Ms. Bezko during the presentations. "Their many achievements will be a springboard for future ventures, leading to a happy and productive life."
