University Club Hosts Wine Tasting

The University Club of Long Island will meet on Monday, Dec. 8 at Edmund's Showcase Restaurant, located at 825 Franklin Ave., Garden City, to hear Nancy Peters talk about Bedell Cellar's wine industry in Cutchogue and "Visiting Santa's Wine Cellar."

The club is privileged to have Nancy Peters as its guest speaker because she brings with her an excellent background of knowledge about the Bedell wine industry that began in 1980. As she take all those attending on a trip to visit Santa's wine cellar, Ms. Peters will share various fruits of the vine with us.

Wine is an ancient beverage that is mentioned in both the Old and New Testaments of the Bible, and is an integral part of many religions. It also has remained at the very heart of good hospitality and social events throughout history.

During December's meeting, everyone will have the opportunity to learn about how this ancient agricultural endeavor found its way to the North Fork of Long Island, a place where most sceptics claimed no quality wine grapes could ever be grown. Bedell Cellars winery has proven the sceptics wrong and has produced not only quality wine grapes, but prize winning vintages.

Membership in the University Club of Long Island is open to men and women graduates of a college or university who desire the intellectual stimulation and camaraderie reflected in the club's motto-- "Scientia et Amicitia." The club always welcomes college and university graduates to join them at their monthly dinner meetings, where they may decide to become a member.

The club meets on the second Monday of the month from October through May at Edmund's Showcase Restaurant in Garden City. The evening begins with cocktails (cash bar) and hors d'oeuvres at 6:30 followed by a buffet dinner at 7:15 followed by the talk for the evening. If you would like to attend call Walter Hobbs Jr. at 747-5657 or Joan Molloy Nedelka at 747-7471.
