Jonathan Cohen of Syosset HS Honored As the News 12 Long Island/MSG Varsity Scholar Athlete of the Week

Jonathan Cohen of Syosset High School has been honored as the “News 12 Long Island/MSG Varsity Scholar Athlete of the Week,” an award that recognizes significant achievements both in the classroom and on the playing field.

Jonathan may be a standout goalie for Syosset High School’s lacrosse team – but he didn’t start out in front of the net. “Well, I actually started as a mid fielder,” said Jonathan. “One day we were beating a team pretty badly and coach asked if someone wanted to try goal and I did.” And from there Jonathan has gone on to enjoy a successful career as the team’s goalie. As a two-year varsity starter for the Syosset Braves, next year he plans to take his talents to Swarthmore College.

And his talent doesn’t end on the field. Jonathan also excels musically, and is the only pianist in the state selected for the jazz ensemble. “Between picking him up right after games, rushing to get him into tuxedos so he can play his instruments has been interesting,” said Syosset High School lacrosse coach John Calabria. “He’s a pretty well-rounded kid.”

Jonathan is just as impressive academically, with a 93 un-weighted average and a 2070 score on his SATs. He hopes to attend medical school – and become a doctor – just like his father.

“Jonathan Cohen represents the high levels of academic and athletic achievement that are hallmarks of the News 12 and MSG Varsity Scholar Athlete program,” said Pat Dolan, president of News 12 Networks and News Director for News 12 Long Island. “We congratulate Jonathan, his family, and Syosset High School for earning this recognition and we wish him continued success this school year and in all his future endeavors.”

Throughout the school year, News 12 Long Island and MSG Varsity “Scholar Athlete” segments appear every Monday beginning on News 12 Long Island’s 5 p.m. newscast.
