The Jericho Jayhawks 8-year old travel baseball team finished its season with a 6-1 record, which was good enough for first place in the 8-National division of the National Junior Baseball League.
In their first season playing in the NJBL, the Jayhawks were able to combine strong pitching, stellar defense and solid hitting to defeat some very tough opponents. The season started with a 16-5 victory over the Garden City Lightning, highlighted by strong hitting throughout the lineup. Andrew Chodes was one of many stars, reaching base all three times he came to the plate. One of the key games of the season was a hard fought 4-3 victory over the Long Island Indians. The game was tied at 3 in the sixth inning until Matthew Rothstein singled and Jordan Miller tripled to drive in Rothstein with the go ahead run. Benny Mark had given the Jayhawks the lead earlier in the game with a two-run home run. Phillip Priolo was also an offensive star with two triples. Steven Gerschwer closed out the victory with four innings of impressive relief pitching.
The Jayhawks played two exciting games with the North Shore Vikings. In a 6-4 victory early in the season, Brandon Weiss tripled in the tying runs in the last inning and then Ryan Berger drove in the winning run. Adam Garten had two hits in that game and played outstanding defense. In an 11-10 victory over the Vikings later in the season, Ari Kantorowitz pitched three innings and led the way offensively with three hits and two RBIs. Other offensive stars were Anthony Cammisuli and Alex Collins, who between them reached base five times and scored three runs. Congratulations to the boys on a great season.
