Last Friday, nearly 140 girls in the Jericho Athletic Association softball program wore their uniform tops to school to show their team pride. Girls from kindergarten through seventh grade participated in this annual tradition at all three elementary schools and Jericho Middle School.
Softball’s largest division, kindergarten/first grade, has seven teams this year, up from three last year. There were thus lots of colors dotting the kindergarten and first-grade classes. This year, the division has held brief practices before each game in order to teach the girls a bit more about the game. For the first time this season, the kindergarten/first grade girls are experiencing “travel” softball – hosting Plainview for one game and traveling to their fields once as well.
In the second season of the JAA’s “travel without tryouts” softball program, the older divisions continued their inter-league program with Plainview, while adding games with Syosset, Farmingdale and Port Washington. The Jericho teams, of course, continued to play their friendly neighborhood rivals.
Most teams will use the first week of June to get ready for the play-offs, which will begin on June 6. There look to be six Jericho teams headed to the post season in three different divisions, in what is sure to be an exciting play-off week.
