The 2013 Sands Point 5K Sprint for the North Shore-LIJ Feinstein Institute was recently held on August 10, where local Plainview and Syosset runners were a success.
The Sands Point course is considered one of the most beautiful of any running event on Long Island by the Greater Long Island Running Club (GLIRC), however not an easy one. The trail in the third mile is not difficult to navigate, and the hill leading up from the trail is one of “the nastiest” found in any Long Island race.
Run Chairman Abe Bernstein and host of that Greater Long Island Running Club went all out to ensure the success of this year’s event, as his way of saying “thank you” to North Shore-LIJ Feinstein Institute who saved Abe’s life and put him back on the track and roads after a second bout with Lymphoma.
Race organizers welcomed Nassau County Comptroller George Maragos and Nassau County Legislator Wayne Wink to the Sprint.
Top finisher from the local area was Ken Colantuoni of Plainview, who was 10th overall in a field of 313 finishers, and 3rd in the tough 40-44 age group, with a time of 20:35.
Other locals winning awards at Sands Point included David Drebsky of Plainview (3rd 30-34 age group, 22:02), Kimberly Schechter of Plainview (3rd women’s 40-44 age group, 29:09), Kathy Neuman of Plainview (3rd women’s 50-54 age group, 28:35), Pamela Lee of Syosset (1st womens 60-64 age group, 25:52), Arthur Koppelman (3rd 70-74 age group, 29:49), and Bert Jablon of Syosset (1st 85 and over age group, 37:57).
Top female finisher was Cristin Delaney-Guille of Long Beach, running for race sponsor The Lynbrook Runner’s Stop in 20:37, with 18 year old Huntington speedster second Lauren Dorsky second, and last year’s runner-up Bradie Ann Dwyer of Garden City third
Esteban Rosales, 26 years old of Astoria, wearing the colors of the Hellgate Runners, scored with a winning time of 18 minutes, 31 seconds in the August 10, 2012 Sands Point 5 Kilometer Sprint for the Feinstein Institute, 17 seconds in front of 17 year old Chris Stamm of Garden City, with top Masters (age 40 plus) finisher Todd Rowley of Huntington a strong third.
