RunStart Program Kicks Off At Bethpage High School

A crowd of more than a hundred novice runners showed up on the track at Bethpage High School on Wednesday evening, June 27, for the first session in the summer-long RunStart program conducted by the Greater Long Island Running Club under the auspices of County Executive Edward P. Mangano and the Nassau County Department of Parks, Recreation and Museums.

The program is designed to get beginners started in a running program that can be the gateway to a healthier and happier lifestyle. Under the guidance of four experienced coaches—RunStart coordinator Debbie Blair, Bob Cook, owner of the Farmingdale-based Runner’s Edge running and multisport specialty store, Greater Long Island Racing Teams coach Ed Melnik, and Joe Picini— trainees will be part of a progressive 10-week program that will culminate with their participation in the Farmingdale Main Street Mile on Sept. 1.

The cost for the entire program is only $30, and it is not too late to show up. Just come down to the Bethpage High School track on Wednesday, July 11 (or any Wednesday evening thereafter) a few minutes before 6:30 p.m. For more information, contact the GLIRC office at 349-7646 or contact program coordinator Debbie Blair at This e-mail address is being protected from spambots.
