So far this season, the Jayhawks are jamming. Once again, the JV Jericho Jayhawks football team took the field to battle the Mepham Pirates on Monday Sept. 20, with look of determination and a shared commitment to a mission that they hope to carry out throughout the rest of the season.
In their first offensive drive, starting on their own 28 yard line, Chandler Kirby took the helm and captained the offense. After several consecutive first down drives, Kirby ran for 35 yards to bring the ball to the Pirates 5 yard line. Justin Roth punched in the first touchdown to put the Jayhawks on the board 7-0.
A powerful Jericho kick-off, a subsequent touchback and Mepham’s first offensive drive started on their own 20 yard line. The Jayhawk defense, led by Kevin Zhao, Matt Klang and Jason White, dominated by clogging the middle and stifling any offensive attack. With the ball back in Jericho’s possession and 10 seconds left in the first quarter, Kirby dropped back and threw a short screen pass to Jacob Albinder, who took advantage of a small opening. Albinder ran for 55 yards to make it first and 10 from the 22 yard line. Kirby then ran in a 7 yard off tackle for his first touchdown. The Jayhawks were up 13-0.
In the second quarter, the Jayhawks demonstrated more of their fierce defense by holding the Pirates scoreless. Jericho once again took possession at the 50 yard line where Roth broke loose for a 50 yard run and his second score of the game.
Other highlights included a 30 yard Kirby pass to Michael Greenberg to close another offensive drive with a touchdown. Albinder found the defensive holes and ran like a man on a mission to scoring three touchdowns during the game. Midway through the fourth quarter, coach Martinez brought in sophomore Alec Stern to finish out the game at Quarterback. He continued to move the ball and wind down the clock. Mepham just could not find the right call to combat the Jayhawk defense, especially when Ryan Condon made a solo tackle behind the line of scrimmage to end the game.
