Eric Basile, one of the best young epee fencers in the nation, will be representing the United States at the 2010 Aramis International Team Championships held this May in Paris, France.
The third grade boys lacrosse team improved their record to 2-0 with an impressive 6-2 win over Northport. The Braves were led by Christian Lyons with four goals and one assist, Jack Rooney’s one goal and three assists, and Jack Monfort’s one goal and one assist. Jason Yacavone and Dylan Hein split time in the goal and did a great job. Matt Losquadro and Nick Hrelja played great on attack, with Nick narrowly missing a goal when he hit a pipe in the 2nd quarter. The midfield of Nick Carchietta, Andrew Bonapace, Michael Anastasio, Erica Haas, Charlie Zandieh, Drew Cohen and Troy Douglas all played outstanding, scooping up numerous groundballs and running them down the field. Andrew Giovinco had another outstanding week at the faceoff X, winning all five of his face-offs. The defense of Ryan Lebson, Matt Majoy, Joseph Cawley, Jacob Katz, James Galvin, and Daniel Shapiro shut down the Northport attack limiting them to a few opportunities. Coaches Jimmy Lyons, Chris Hein and Eric Majoy were very pleased with the effort of the boys.
On Saturday, April 10, under a clear blue sky, the Jericho Athletic Association’s Little League baseball season kicked off with opening day festivities at Lynch Field at Merry Lane.
The boys third grade lacrosse team opened up the spring season with a strong 8-0 win over Oceanside. Ethan Berch opened the scoring with the first goal of the year off a great assist from Andrew Giovinco. Giovinco assisted again on the second goal of the game by Jack Rooney, one of his four goals on the day. Nicky Carchietta kept the momentum going by scoring on a great move to end the first quarter. Andrew Giovinco scored a goal to get the second quarter started, and the Braves never looked back. After playing an amazing goal in the first half, Christian Lyons came out of the net to get a goal in the third quarter. The midfielders of Dylan Hein, Ryan Lebson, Andrew Bonapace dominated the groundballs all day. The defense led by Matt Majoy, Joseph Cawley, Jacob Katz all played outstandingly well, denying Oceanside time after time.
The Syosset Youth Football and Cheerleading League recently announced Community Days on Saturday, April 24 from 9:30 a.m. to noon for 9,10 and 11-year-olds and Saturday, May 8, from 9:30 a.m. to noon for 6-, 7- and 8-year-olds.
The Syosset Baseball Association and the Town of Oyster Bay recently announced the overhaul of the Syosset Woodbury Community Park 60-foot baseball field in time for the opening day game to take place on Wednesday, April 14.
On Saturday night, March 20, at a steamy Island Garden in West Hempstead, before an enthusiastic crowd, Coach Warren Wagner’s eighth-grade Long Island Lightning AAU Basketball team, sponsored by Celebrity Diner, stunned previously unbeaten (14-0) LI Lightning Law 43-40, to capture the eighth-grade Division 1 Super League Championship.
Perennial Caumsett 50K superstar Michael Wardian of Arlington Virginia did it again on March 7 – his third consecutive victory in the Caumsett State Park 50 Kilometer Run. Mike covered the 10 loop 31.07 mile course in 2 hours, 55 minutes, 50 seconds, a scant 40 seconds short of the race record that he set in 2008, but a solid eight minutes plus in front of runner-up Malcolm Campbell of Marietta, Georgia. Scott Jaime of Highlands Ranch, Colorado scored third, and top Master Dan Verrington of Bradford, Massachussetts crossed the finish line in front of the Winter Cottage at Caumsett in fourth place overall.
The Jericho Hawks, girls U12 travel soccer team, was awarded the Sportsmanship Award for the Fall 2009 season at the Long Island Junior Soccer League’s Annual Convention held in March.
