Cappellini And Kartes-Heino Lead In Greenbelt Trail 50 Kilometer Run

Forty-five-year-old Norton, Massachusetts veteran ultra-marathoner Christopher Cappellini, who had scored first in the Long Island Greenbelt Trail 50K Run in 2011, scored a repeat victory in this year’s 10th annual run. Cappellini finished in 4:30:15 this year, a tad slower than his 2011 finish of 4:27:37. Forty-two-year-old Jodi Kartes-Heino, a Long Island local who had finished as the third woman in 2011 with a time of 5:46:06, vaulted to first place this year in 5:31:45.

A contingent of local finishers included Kenneth Colantuoni of Plainview (25th place, 6:31:48), Vincent Colantuoni of Syosset (33rd place, 7:13:06), and Howard Cragg of Bethpage (46th place, 9:30:52). In the accompanying 25K run, local finishers included Miriam Fein of Plainview (2:57:13) and Michael Korol of Syosset (3:18:04).

Due to the community’s desire for an 8-year-old baseball program, the following age group is invited to Jericho Athletic Association (JAA) evaluations scheduled for Friday, June 8 and Tuesday, June 12.

If your child was born between May 1, 2003 through Apr. 30, 2004, he is eligible for this evaluation. Players, based upon their evaluation, may be added to the 9-year-old travel team if roster positions are available. Additionally, for those 8-year-old baseball players who are not offered positions on the 9-year-old travel team, there will be an 8-year-old developmental baseball team that will play in NJBL in the fall and spring.

The game, which ended in an 11-11 tie, was held in conjunction with the Syosset Baseball Annual Brian Murphy Memorial All Star Tournament.

This spring, the Syosset High School Baseball Team had the opportunity to help with the Long Island Special Olympics Spring Games, held at Huntington High School. As the athletes entered the field for opening ceremonies the players were there to welcome them and cheer them on. Throughout the day, the players were assigned to escort the athletes to their track events. The players supported the athletes during each race by applauding and then congratulating them at the finish line. Finally, they escorted the athletes to receive their awards. Pictured, the Syosset High School baseball players and coaches had a rewarding day.


SBA To Hold Brian Murphy 2012 Memorial Day All-Star Games And Picnic

Syosset Baseball Association’s (SBA) traditional Memorial Weekend All-Star games will be held on Saturday, May 26 at Syosset-Woodbury Community Park. The day will start off with an 8:30 a.m. 8-year-old division All-Star game, followed by the A division (9-year-old) game at 10:45 a.m.

A 1 p.m. game will feature the AA Division (10-year-old) players followed by a 3:15 p.m. Major League Division game. In the major league game, the first pitch will be thrown by Deacon Murphy whose son, Brian, an SBA player, died from an illness several years ago; the games are named in his honor.

Bradley Raxenberg of Woodbury makes it three for four

Twenty-three-year-old Bradley Raxenberg of Woodbury scored his third overall win over the four-race RunNassau Series, smoking the field at the Eisenhower Park 4-miler with a 22:03 finish, 51 seconds in front of his nearest challenger, 43-year-old John Kane of Levittown, who was the first masters finisher at Eisenhower Park.

New Jersey’s Patricia Brims solidified her hold on the overall women’s series championship with a 25:52 win at Eisenhower, notwithstanding a strong effort by runner-up Cristin Delaney-Guille, and Lesli Hiller of the Nassau Police Running Club who took top honors among the Masters Women with a time of 28:14.

Ed Wolfarth Receives Hy Zausner Lifetime Achievement In Tennis Award

Ed Wolfarth of Syosset received the Hy Zausner Lifetime Achievement in Tennis Award from the U.S. Tennis Association Eastern Section Long Island Region at the organization’s 22nd Annual Awards Dinner on Wednesday, May 9. This award is the Long Island region’s highest honor. The Long Island region also recognized several other area tennis players and organizations at its dinner.

Wolfarth is being honored for being one of Long Island’s most dedicated volunteers, both as a member of the Long Island Region Board and as a tireless volunteer at events such as the Fire Island Breast Cancer Tennis Fundraiser, 10 and under clinics and workshops, Long Island Kids Day, Long Island Corporate Challenge, Long Island Corporate Tennis Fundraiser, USPTA workshops, Pro-Am fundraisers and more. He is the racket sports specialist at Hofstra University and a professor of physical education and sport sciences at Queens College.

The spring season of SYAC Girls Softball is well under way, with girls playing games in four divisions all around town. A few springtime showers couldn’t dampen the spirits of several hundred girls from Syosset, Woodbury and Jericho, who play SYAC Softball each spring.
