William L. McAvoy died on March 4, 2010 in Mendham, NJ, at the age of 88 after a long illness. Mr. McAvoy was born on April 19, 1921 in Flushing. Upon his graduation from Fordham University in 1943, he enlisted in the army and was stationed in New Guinea for the duration of WWII.
After the service, he obtained his master’s degree in education from Columbia University and began a distinguished career as high school history teacher, first in New York City and then in Nassau County.
He married Mary (“May”) Reardon in 1951. From 1953 to 1983, William and May lived in Syosset, where they raised five children.
For many years, Mr. McAvoy was the chairman of the social studies department of New Hyde Park Memorial High School. The McAvoys were charter parishioners of St. Edward the Confessor RC Church in Syosset, where Mr. McAvoy served as a lector and on the parish council.
In addition to his wife, May, he is survived by five children and fourteen grandchildren. His children are: Peter (Vera) of Mendham, NJ, Mark (Laura) of Lloyd Neck, Alice of Forest Hills, Brian (Cathy) of Naples, FL, and Justin (Cristina) of Manhattan. He is also survived by Natalie and John Seeke of Syosset.
A funeral Mass was held at St. Edward the Confessor on March 10. Interment at Mount St. Mary’s Cemetery in Flushing.
