As the key enters the lock, after a vacation or a weekend trip, there is great trepidation.
Will the home be untouched and will everything be in order? When the answer is “Yes,” there is a huge sigh of relief. Now we can pick up our lives and continue along the same life-path as before.
And yet there is plenty of work to do before the unpacking begins. Take in the mail is step number one. Are there any urgent bills (of course) or any items to be taken care of immediately? Are there any welcoming checks from unknown sources that need attending to? Nothing from the IRS – thank heavens!
Next the telephone needs our attention. The many messages (all seemingly important) are listed, along with the numbers that have to be called back. The answering machine holds all kinds of news – some good – some not so good – and some just forms of advertising.
On to the Internet. How many messages on the computer? The e-mail and spam sometime lists into the hundreds. We must quietly sit in front of the screen and press “read” and sometimes press “delete” until all the notices are gone. We must read the bad jokes, the political insights, the items on sale, the new cures for a variety of diseases and, occasionally and rarely, a worthwhile message from someone we truly care about.
Then a call to all the kids to make sure that everything is in order. That goes for kids and grandkinds, whew! Everything is OK.
Our good neighbors have taken in the newspapers from the driveway. Piles of newspapers is a sign to all that nobody is home. A dangerous situation!
Unpacking that suitcase that you have been wheeling and carrying around is next on the agenda. The dirty laundry needs to be placed in the hamper before being sent to the waiting washing machine.
After all these chores have been accomplished, you are now free to lie down on your favorite couch. Holding the remote control in your hand, you are then entitled to select your preferred TV programs in peace and tranquility. Happy homecoming!
