As we arise to face the day, we have to be aware that the smaller, everyday things rule our life. “Boy, that orange juice tastes good!” It wakes up your mouth, and not long after, your whole being. Coffee and half a bagel are the next order of the day. Take your five pills and you are ready to go. I get my “good morning kiss” from Lorraine and I’m off.
The newspapers, double and triple-wrapped are lying in wait on the asphalt driveway. Turning rapidly to the “Jumble” (words scrambled) I do my daily battle against the dreaded Alzheimer’s disease. Sometimes solving the answers is easy and sometimes not.
Let me now check my daily and weekly schedule. Do I have a morning tennis game or do I have classes at SUNY, Old Westbury or Nassau Community College. Auditing classes is wonderful. No midterms or finals. No papers to be turned in if you so desire. Just listen, participate and learn.
Occasionally I meet for breakfast at Bagel Boss with the ROMEOs. This acronymic group stands for Retired Old Men Eating Out. The political debates are invigorating, and it’s a pleasure to debate with older guys who have lived through many years. Baseball, (Mets and Yankees – N.Y. Giants and Brooklyn Dodgers) is also a serious topic. New jokes and funny stories are always welcome.
I still meet with my Hicksville American pals and coaches from the 1970s and ‘80s. Peter Collins is still our glorious leader and the discussions are about old times and new times.
The world is now computerized so I go upstairs to view my emails. I am not a computer whiz but I manage with one finger to keep up correspondence with friends and family. The daily spam is enormous.
On Monday, I pay attention to my weekly column. For 11 years, I have come up with ideas. I enjoy the exercise of writing my column and sending it to my editor, Denise.
On Sunday mornings I don my thinking helmet and rush off to do battle with Will Shortz, The New York Times puzzle master. I attempt the Sunday crossword puzzle until it is game time for either the Jets or Giants.
Thank God for “The Little Things!” They are a huge help in retirement!
