Letter: Stop Bullying By Coaches!

This letter was sent to Carol Hankin, Superintendent of Syosset Schools, and Richard Schaub, Director of Athletics at Syosset School District

This letter is being written by 17 plus families who have discussed the status of the coaching in the district in light of the Rutgers University issues.

For many years, we have complained of the bullying tactics and use of cursing of many of the coaching staff for our children. Many of us have graduates of the school, and some still have student athletes.  There are some very dedicated and wonderful coaches on staff, who seem to accomplish making the team experience a positive one without use of these unacceptable tactics.

The pervading lack of concern for our concerns about bullying coaches is despicable and needs to be addressed and not continually ignored.  You should not wait until there is a video to address the pervading problems with the behavior of many coaches.  Without naming names, you both are aware or should be aware, of the coaches we are referring to, both for male and female teams.

There needs to be some policy in place to review the concerns of the student athletes and parents as to how these coaches speak to and deal with students.

There should also be a transparent policy in how to remove and reprimand unacceptable behavior of the coaches, as there is a District policy as to students’ behavior and we should expect nothing less and an even higher standard for its teachers/coaches!

There is no oversight and it seems that one can stay in a coaching position by merely staying in place despite the complaints and lack of success of the team.

This letter is being written anonymously as there has been retribution against a student athlete in the past, which in and of itself is unacceptable but true.

As there is a press conference release in the spring, the contents of this letter and its concerns should be addressed in the upcoming press release.  It would be refreshing to see Syosset’s “dirty” laundry addressed by the District, as it seems matters of this kind continually get swept under the rug.

Thank you and we look forward to seeing the District address the coaching matters that need to be fixed in the District.
