Editorial: A Charter School In The Neighborhood?

This coming Tuesday, Aug. 14, Jericho School District will be hosting a public hearing on the new proposed school to be opened on the SUNY Old Westbury grounds, The Doshi STEM Charter School, immediately after the district’s regular board meeting concludes. The board meeting is scheduled to start at 7 at Jericho High School, so the hearing will probably start sometime around 8 p.m. Those not able to attend, but who would like to comment on the proposed school, are welcome to email their comments to This e-mail address is being protected from spambots. I’m interested in seeing what residents have to say about the possibility of a charter school opening right near Jericho High School. Many people have strong opinions on charter schools, some considering them the savior of our children while others consider them a grave threat to the future of public education, but for a long time, for people in this area those concerns have been somewhat abstract. We’ve discussed charter schools in the city, and in other states where the standard of public education generally isn’t as high as it is on Long Island, but this is probably the first time we’ve had to ask ourselves if we want a charter school right here in the neighborhood. If education is important to you, make sure your voice is heard, either at the hearing this week or by email.
