Jericho High School Celebrates 50th Commencement

The warm summer sun heated the day quickly for 339 members of the Jericho High School Class of 2010 and their families and friends who gathered together in celebration of the fiftieth annual Commencement on Sunday, June 27. Students, in a sea of blue and gold, entered the auditorium at the Tilles Center to sounds of “Pomp and Circumstance” promptly at 9 a.m. After senior class president Jesse Aronica recited the Pledge and the graduation band played the National Anthem, student council co-presidents Michael Lesser and Caroline Motschwiller welcomed family and friends to the day’s festivities.
This year, Jericho High School graduates witnessed a unique valedictory address from co-valedictorians Rohitvarma Basavaraju, Mubarrat Nuvid Bhuiyan, Jeremy Feinstein, Pragya Kakani, Yvette Leung, Brandon Li and April Xiong. The seven valedictorians, a record-breaking number for Jericho, performed an entertaining skit entitled “2010: A Jericho Odyssey” followed by some thoughts for graduates to bear in mind as they head off to the next phase of their lives.
Jericho School Board President Barbara Krieger, Superintendent of Schools Hank Grishman and High School Principal Joseph Prisinzano each offered advice to consider for the class of 2010. Then, amid a sea of flashing cameras, each of the 339 Jericho High School seniors received diplomas from Mrs. Krieger, Mr. Grishman, and Mr. Prisinzano. A special “graduation diploma” was presented to Nancy Sammis, the retiring Health, Physical Education and Athletics Curriculum Associate. After leaving the stage of the auditorium to the Grand March, smiling graduates and families poured outside onto the grounds of the Tilles Center. Cheers, kisses, hugs, handshakes, and even a few tears completed this memorable occasion for the Jericho High School Class of 2010.
