Superintendent Commends All-County Artists

Board of education discusses pay freezes

Syosset Superintendent of Schools Dr. Carole G. Hankin gave a glowing report of the district at the public board meeting on March 19 at South Woods Middle School.

“Syosset High School was one of only seven high schools in New York State, and the only high school from Long Island, to participate in NanoCareer Day held at the University at Albany College of Nanoscale Science and Engineering,” Hankin said. “Twenty-nine Syosset High School students attended lectures, presentations and demonstrations.  A 2011 graduate of Syosset High School is currently majoring in nano-engineering at SUNY Albany.  He took the course of explorations of nanotechnology in high school.”

Sixty-three artists from the district have been selected to showcase their work at the eighth annual Nassau All-County Art Exhibition, and 13 local high school students qualified for the upcoming New York DECA competition in Rochester.

Additionally, two Syosset High School students have been selected as candidates for the United States Presidential Scholars Program. This program serves to recognize and honor the nation’s most distinguished graduating high school seniors.  Candidates are named based on broad academic achievement, to go along with their SAT and ACT scores.

Hankin’s final note was that there would be seven school district election registrations held prior to the May 15 annual election.

“Each registration will be held at all seven elementary schools,” she noted.  “Registration begins on March 27, 2012.”

Board President Dr. Marc W. Herman praised the district’s collective bargaining units for agreeing to freezes in pay for various lengths of time, due to the tight budget for the upcoming school year.

“We appreciate that all of the bargaining units have made generous concessions for the 2012-13 budget,” Herman said. “The Principal’s Association, the Teacher’s Association, the CSEA and administrative assistants have agreed to half a year of freezes on salary and step raises.  Teaching assistants have agreed to a full-year freeze. The budget will be completed, and we have agreements from all of our bargaining units.  The district will be posting the entire budget on the official school district website as soon as all of the lines are adjusted.”

Herman added that the concessions would only be made if the budget passes in May.

Beauty and the Beast was performed by Syosset High School students this year at the meeting. The board meets next on April 17 at South Woods Middle School for a public meeting and budget work session.
