Hatchery Founder’s Celebration

Children of all ages celebrate the founding of the Cold Spring Fish Hatchery & Aquarium, Route 25A, Cold Spring Harbor, as an environmental learning center. Learn about the namesake of the hatchery’s Fairchild Building, Julia Fairchild and her love of trout fishing and the natural wonders of the environment. Activities include a tour of the trout ponds, fish feeding and nature related craft. General admission $ 6 adults; $4 children ages 3 to 12 and seniors 65 over; members free. 1:30 to 2:30 p.m.


Monday, January 4

Golden Donor Blood Drive

There will be entertainment, raffles and give aways. Al Fischer, a Korean War veterans and resident of Massapequa who has donated over 40 gallons plus, will again donate blood. He is a candidate to enter the Guiness Book of World Records. Donors who have passed their 75th birthday can present a dated letter from their physician indicating it is safe to donate. This letter is valid for two months. For questions regarding travel and medical restrictions call 1-800-688-0900. Blood can be donated from 8:30 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the following locations: Crest Hollow Country Club, 8325 Jericho Tpke., Woodbury; Lake Success Center, 2500 Marcus Ave., Lake Success; Melville Donor Center, 905 Walt Whitman Rd., Route 110, Melville; Rockville Centre Donor Center, 290 Sunrise Hwy., Rockville Centre.

Women of the Bible

Everyone knows the men of the Bible – Moses, Abraham, Isaac, Jacob, Aaron and many more. But what about the women? Rabbi Jaimee Shalhevet and Rabbi Helayne Shalhevet of North Shore Synagogue and Rabbi Jeni Friedman of Temple Beth Sholom in Roslyn will give their voices to the women of the Bible, in “Women of the Bible: Their Stories from Their Lips.” This lively event is free and open to the public and the congregation. Light refreshments will be served. For information, call 921-2282. The program is presented by North Shore Synagogue’s Sisterhood and the Committee for Lifelong Learning. 7:30 p.m. at North Shore Synagogue, 83 Muttontown Rd., Syosset.

Jericho SEPTA

The January SEPTA meeting will offer a panel of college admissions representatives, parents of and former students of the Jericho School District. The confirmed panel of college administrations comes from Quinnipiac, Adelphi, High Point (North Carolina) and Nassau Community College. The main focus of discussion will be information on transitioning from high school to college and preparing a young adult for self-advocacy in the college setting. The administrators will discuss various programs available and walk parents and students through the process of services at the university level and how students can apply for these. Vocational and other post-high school information will also be provided. The target audience is parents and students in high school as well as parents and students in Middle School looking for preparation in the years ahead. 7:30 p.m. at the middle school.

Women’s Worship Workout

These 75-minute classes are suited for all fitness levels and are facilitated by AFAA certified instructor Marina Ekstrom. Each session includes aerobics, strength training, kick boxing, pilates and balance training choreographed to uplifting music. Classes meet Monday and Friday from 10:30 to 11:45 a.m. at Shelter Rock Church, 178 Cold Spring Rd., Syosset. The cost for one day/week is $50 or two day/week $100 for the entire 10-week session.
