Nature Tours

Enjoy a guided nature walk on the trails throughout the year from 1 to 2 p.m. at the Hoffman Center Nature Preserve and Wildlife Sanctuary, 6000 Northern Blvd., Muttontown (between Route 106 and 107 – just west of Martin Viette Nursery). Meet the guide at the site entrance at 12:50 p.m. Gate locked when tour begins. No pets, no children under 10 years of age or organized groups permitted. Weather permitting. Casino Night

Temple Chaverim, 1050 Washington Ave., Plainview, is hosting a Casino Night from 8 p.m. to midnight. Event Kings/Casino Kings will operate the casino tables that will include blackjack, roulette, craps, a money wheel, slot machines and Texas hold’em. There will also be entertainment in the “Lucky Chai Lounge” hosted by Steven Pinsky. Open to the public. Cost of entry is $75 per person and includes gaming table access, casino money ($150 temple members and $100 nonmembers), desserts and open bar. All attendees must be 18 years or older and at least 21 to enjoy the open bar. Temple Chaverim will also be producing a “Blue & White” neighborhood directory in conjunction with Casino Night. One of Midway Jewish Center’s (330 South Oyster Bay Rd., Syosset) fine Adult Education programs, though it doesn’t quite feel like one. The program is open to the public. Girlfriends Dinner Program

A dinner program designed to meet the special needs of women with Crohn’s disease or ulcerative colitis, will be presented at the Woodlands at Woodbury, by the LI Chapter of the Crohn’s & Colitis Foundation of America. The evening will include exhibits providing health and beauty information for female IBD patients, a full dinner, literature, raffles and more. Members $45; nonmembers $55. Conversation On Adolescence

North Shore Synagogue, 83 Muttontown Rd., Syosset, invites parents and guardians of teenagers to a conversation with author Scott Fried, adolescent motivational speaker and health educator, from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. His parent discussion entitled, Hearing Our Children, is a very moving and important conversation, involving the secrets most teens would like to keep from their parents. Using himself as Exhibit A, Scott shares the difficult story of his painful disclosures to his own family. More importantly, this talk will offer specific ideas and techniques on parenting a teenager through this difficult time of adolescent angst and their burgeoning experiences as the newest members of the sexual community.

Piano Recital

Pianist Louis Schwizgebel won First Prize in the 2007 Young Concert Artists International Auditions and was presented by the Young Concert Artists Series in his New York debut at Carnegie’s Zankel Hall, sponsored by the Peter Marino Debut Prize, and his Washington, DC, debut at the Kennedy Center’s Terrace Theater. COPE, a grief and healing organization dedicated to supporting parents and families living with the loss of a child, holds free weekly support groups. Muttontown Unitarian Universalist Fellowship

The Fellowship provides an atmosphere of warmth and camaraderie, with talks presented by intelligent enlightening and non-dogmatic speakers who come from the entire spectrum of the arts, history and sciences. This is followed by coffee and an informal discussion circle, held in the turn-of-the-18th century farmhouse in a bucolic setting. The Cold Spring Harbor Fish Hatchery & Aquarium, 1665 Route 25A, Cold Spring Harbor, announces the return of its hit program, Pollywog Adventures, for kids ages 3 to 5. A shared experience for parents and their pollywogs, the program offers participants an opportunity to learn about the watery natural world which surrounds us. Children and parents will celebrate the hatchery’s exhibit animals through live animal shows, crafts, activities and stories. New events every week.
