The Second Squad reports the arrest of a Freeport man for sexual abuse, which occurred on Tuesday, May 28, 2013 at 4 p.m. in Woodbury.
According to detectives, on Tuesday, May 21 at 3:45 p.m. the owner of Dun Rite Upholstery, Alfred Balcerak, 54, of 25 N. Long Beach Avenue, approached a male employee in his twenties, pulled down his pants and grabbed his genitals. The victim turned away and exited the store, which is located at 18 W. Jericho Turnpike in Syosset. Balcerak is a Level 3 Registered Sex Offender, and designated a Predicate Sex Offender. On Tuesday, May 28, at 4 p.m., the defendant turned himself in at the Second Precinct in Woodbury, without incident.
Balcerak is charged with Sexual Abuse in the First Degree and was arraigned on Wednesday, May 29 at First District Court in Hempstead.

A Syosset surgeon has become the first in the United States to present findings from a clinical trial on a combined bariatric approach to enhance weight loss that involves implanting a Lap Band and performing surgery on the stomach.
Plication, or surgery to fold the outer curve of the stomach into a pleat, is new in its application to bariatric surgeries. For decades, the procedure was used to treat perforated ulcers or stomach trauma.

On Nov. 7, more than 150 supporters gathered for MercyFirst’s Annual Harvest Ball held at The Garden City Hotel, raising more than $100,000 to help fund MercyFirst’s programs.

Jericho Celeste Taub, 13, showed that she could run with the big girls (and the big boys!) on Sunday, Nov. 17, as she scored a decisive victory in the Women’s Division of the 5th annual Blue Ribbon Run for Prostate Cancer, a 5-kilometer road race that started and finished at Syosset-Woodbury Community Park.
Taub finished the Run in 20 minutes, 17 seconds, 53 seconds in front of 36-year-old runner-up Kelly Bregou of New York City.
