During legislative session recently, Nassau County Legislator Judy Jacobs (D-Woodbury) presented Syosset resident Lana Ajemian with this year's Nassau County Woman Trailblazer Award.
"Many people in the Syosset-Woodbury community refer to Lana as the 'go-to' lady, but I know her as an extraordinary woman who can accomplish anything she sets her mind to," said Jacobs.
Ajemian and her husband, Dr. Peter Ajemian, raised their four children in Syosset and are the proud grandparents of their first grandchild. Ajemian is currently a member of, among others, the Syosset Chamber of Commerce, NY State School Boards Association, the executive committee of the Nassau -Suffolk School Boards Association, and the Jericho-Syosset/Woodbury Partnership of Child Care Council of Nassau. She is also a strong presence and dedicated volunteer with the NY State PTA, Nassau Region PTA, Syosset Council of PTAs, SEPTA and the Syosset High School PTSA.
"To be recognized by Judy Jacobs is such an honor," said Ajemian. "Judy is the personification of community service. It seems surreal to receive recognition for something one loves doing. To me, it is just the natural order of things to devote ourselves to making our communities safe and healthy places where children can live, thrive and learn to be good citizens. So while it fills many more hours than the average work week, it is simply a labor of love."
Ajemian has received numerous honors and distinguished awards from the myriad organizations in which she is involved.
Ajemian started volunteering for the PTA when her children were young to stay involved in the schools and it took off from there. "Now I am advocating for other people's children," said Ajemian. "This is very important to me."
Ajemian thanked her husband Peter and children, Chris and his wife Sara, Peter, Matthew and Jennifer for their support.
