The Syosset Boys seventh- and eighth-grade basketball championship game was won by the Lakers. As the season unrolled, it was no surprise that these players would go all the way. Coached by Herb Albernas, they had come together on the court as one team. Whether they were taking shots in the paint or from the outside, they were always looking for their teammates.
The team started off strong with a 10 point lead in the first four minutes, but found themselves in a tie game seconds before the half. Due to their strong defense, the boys kept their opponent to only 14 points in the entire second half. As a team, quickly moving the ball to the open man, they jumped ahead, for a final score of 58 to 37.
Nick Albernas was a major offensive contributor with 20 points, showing tremendous speed and quickness on both offense and defense. Alizain Tejani, the team's 'big man' scored 18 points and maintained position under the boards. Robby Jablonowski contributed 6 points along with his outstanding rebounds and defensive play down low. Matt Bahar handled the ball skillfully making key passes, opening himself up for two key 3-point baskets. Jatan Anand always had position under the board for his points and quick hands on the defensive end. Dean Lumish played an aggressive game driving to the basket for his points and knowing when to dish out to the open man. Steven Hur boxed out and rebounded on both sides of the floor. Aram Nercessian also added to the team points and played great defense.
