Opinion

Last week, the 111th Congress made history by passing the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act. I supported this bill because we've lost 3.6 million jobs in the last 13 months and last month our unemployment rate climbed to 7.6 percent. That's unacceptable, and we need to put people back to work - now.

This bill makes the most significant investment in green energy jobs to date. I fought to include more than $90 billion in investments and tax credits to support green projects. If Nassau and Suffolk embrace this opportunity, we can create thousands of new energy jobs right here on Long Island.

Experts estimate that this bill could create up to 3.5 million new jobs, including 7,700 for my constituents.

But if we want these new jobs, we must be proactive about it. On Monday Feb. 23 at 10 a.m. I will be joining with Kevin Law, CEO of LIPA, and a representative from the Department of Energy at LIPA headquarters to direct business owners, researchers, and elected officials on how to apply for and receive funding so that our community can lead the way in getting these new green jobs and ending our dependence on foreign oil. Never again will the energy movement have an opportunity like this and I am fighting to make sure Long Island is first in line.

If you would like to attend this workshop, or for more details, please call my office and RSVP to Jennifer Pastrich at (631) 951-2210.
