Eric Basile, a Jericho Middle School student, ranked 16th in the United States Epee 12-and-under category for 2008. Eric achieved this by fencing in the North Atlantic Cup placing 3rd, and a division championship in New Hampshire. Eric also competed in last year's Summer National in San Jose, California and finished 17th at that event. The United States Fencing Association Summer Nationals is the largest domestic fencing tournament for top-qualifying fencers in the country in all age groups. Only a very small percentage of fencers distinguished themselves on a national level. The top 20 percent of Long Island fencers can qualify for the Summer Nationals, or one can qualify by performing at a high level at a national tournament, Eric had done both.

Eric is affiliated with both the North Shore Fencers Club in Manhasset, and The New York Athletic Club in New York City. Eric's primary coach is Reuben Gregoryian, a multiple worldwide epee fencing champion, formerly from Armenia. The North Shore Fencer's Club is an after-school fencing club dedicated to both recreational and competitive fencing. The New York Athletic Club is an invitation only training facility that has produced over 139 Olympians. Eric had first made the High School Varsity Fencing team for Jericho while in 7th grade, and as a substitute, developed a record of 9-2. Eric, now in 8th grade, is the number 1 starter for the Jericho men's epee squad. Fencing is a kind of physical chess, combining critical thinking skills and athleticism. It is a high performing, extremely demanding physical and mental sport, whose standouts are regularly recruited by Ivy League and top universities. Eric practices six days per week during fencing season and competes internationally at least 3 times a year. Eric likes meeting his fellow competitive fencers from all over the country whom he sees frequently at tournaments. Eric has accumulated over 26 gold medals, 9 silver medals, and 4 bronze medals at both local and national tournaments, and has been recruited by some of the best fencing coaches in the United States.

Eric's father, Mark Basile, is a Jericho Board of Education Trustee. Logo
