The Syosset Chamber of Commerce held its Fifth Annual Street Fair on Sunday, Sept. 14. Members of the Street Fair committee started arriving at 4:30 a.m. and additional members trickled in at various designated times, each taking up their role in making the street fair the successful hit that it has been for the past five years.
However, the committee had to decide if the fair would still go on because it was raining. Many months of preparation, attending weekly meetings among committee members, with police officers from the local second precinct Nassau County Police Precinct, various TOB departments, clean up crews, permits, etc., were about to dissolve in a matter of hours. The light drizzle continued into daylight, exposing the horizon to horizon ceiling of clouds. Many vendors sat at home next to their phone waiting for the 'all clear' or the 'postponement call.' Around 8 a.m. the rain stopped. The Syosset Street Fair was an 'all clear.'
The early morning rain also seemed to dampen the plans of many other citizens from doing whatever they had planned, because by noon the street fair was packed with people. The strollers, filled with children were out in force. It wouldn't be a day trapped at home after all.
The street fair had rides, food, and trinkets and things to buy, including singing entertainment, on the TOB band shell, by popular children's performer Darlene Graham. In addition the iSchool Band also performed. Busy downtown Jackson Avenue was closed to autos and other vehicle types, all day long, exclusively for the public.
