The Jericho Heat, a U-11 boys travel soccer from the Jericho Soccer Club, accomplished a rare double victory this past fall by completing a perfect record in division play, and receiving the Sportsmanship Award from the Long Island Junior Soccer League.
The boys competed in and captured Nassau County's Division 3 by winning all nine games in convincing fashion. They showcased a devastating offensive attack complemented by a defense that shut down the opposition on a routine basis. They outscored their opponents by a total of 24 goals, and scored 7 goals on three different occasions.
In addition to achieving the goal of a championship season, what the team considered more special was accomplishing another goal that they set for themselves at the beginning of the season: winning the Sportsmanship Award. The Sportsmanship Award is presented to the team in each division that best represents the ideals of fair play and behavior during the course of the season. Very rarely is it presented to a team that, week in and week out, dominated their opponents on the field of play. However, the boys set out to achieve these goals before the season began and worked hard, with great teamwork, support for each other and most of all, respect for their opponents, to realize their goals. As a result, they accomplished something that they, their families and the community will always be able to look back on with pride.
