Tennis courts at the Jericho Middle/High School complex were removed over a two-day period last week. Construction of the new courts, which will include lighting for nighttime use, will proceed based on weather conditions.

The replacement of tennis courts at the Jericho Middle/High School complex is now under way. Bulldozers, backhoes and dump trucks moved in this past week and ripped out the existing courts over a two-day period. Construction of the new courts will proceed based on weather conditions and are expected to be ready for the fall season. The district is finalizing options for use of alternate sites for the spring season.

Last year, Joseph Jenal, the district architect from BJLJ, strongly recommended the replacement of the tennis courts for safety reasons. The funding for the tennis courts project was included in the regular operating budget under Capital Buildings Improvements in the 2007-2008 Budget.

The district submitted the plans to the New York State Education Department this past summer. After receiving approval from the state, the project was immediately put out to bid. The new courts will include lighting for nighttime utilization.
