Some folks are just born storytellers. Dr. Stanley Greenberg is one of those people.

Last Friday night, Dr. Greenberg enthralled a standing room only audience with his tales at Borders bookstore in Syosset. The in-store appearance was in promotion of his new book Over 60 and Getting Younger, a collection of articles previously published in the Syosset Jericho Tribune.

Dr. Greenberg kicked off the evening by expressing his belief that each person "is the sum of their experiences, or in other words, their stories." And while those stories may never be published, he encouraged his listeners to share them just the same.

Following the introduction, he read a number of stories from the book including, "Scram Kid" and "The Bar Mitzvah Dress". He also treated the audience to a few yet to be released tales including one about The Sopranos.

Most of the stories in the book are autobiographical and that meshed perfectly with the crowd assembled to hear them. Friends from nearly every part of Dr. Greenberg's life were on hand to support the former dentist, now raconteur.

In addition to a contingent of friends and neighbors from the Hamlet in Jericho who were on hand, the audience also featured two of Dr. Greenberg's classmates from NYU dental school, his sister Sandra and neighbors from his old neighborhood of Westbury Hills.

Of course, Dr. Greenberg's wife Lorraine was on hand to keep the good doctor's reminiscences from going on too long!

Dr. Greenberg started writing his columns over a decade ago after retiring from a career in dentistry. He was introduced to the writing business by a friend of his son's whom he coached in Hicksville-American Soccer 20 years ago.

"It just goes to show you that you never know how things turn up," said Dr. Greenberg after the event. "So you have to treat everybody with respect."

Dr. Greenberg's work has since appeared in numerous publications including TheStreet.com, Back in the Bronx magazine, the Plainview Old Bethpage Herald and the Hicksville Illustrated.

In order to complete the book, Dr. Greenberg pored through the hundreds of articles he has written over the past decade to find his favorites. After this exhausting process, he worked with his editor at Authorhouse to complete the book.

"Completing the book was a labor of love, but it definitely took a lot of labor," said Dr. Greenberg. "A lot of people - especially my kids - were worried that I would spend my retirement watching TV, but that surely has not been the case. The book is proof."

After the event, Dr. Greenberg signed books for the crowd. And he promised that he "still has a lot of stories left in him."
