Muttontown couple Varsha Sabhnani and her husband Mahender Sabhnani have been in custody since their arrest last month on charges of keeping two Indonesian women as slaves in their home and were also indicted on May 22 by a federal grand jury on those charges and charges of harboring illegal residents, according to court documents.

On May 30, Senior U.S. District Court Judge Thomas Platt granted the couple bail, $2.5 million for Varsha Sabhnani and $1 million for Mahender Sabhnani, if and when the government and defense counsel work out an agreement of home confinement terms. That did not happen and earlier this week, Judge Platt decided there will be no bail.

According to Robert Nardoza from the United States Attorney's office, Mahender and Varsha Sabhnani will be held without bail until the trial, which is scheduled for Sept. 10. There will also be a status conference, which is a pre-trial meeting of the attorneys before Judge Platt, on July 13.
