The Syosset Chamber of Commerce held its monthly meeting at its office location on the Syosset Community Church site on Thursday, June 8.
Chamber President Michael Biggiani opened the meeting with discussions of up coming chamber events, such as the very popular Syosset Chamber Street Fair, scheduled for Sunday, Sept. 17. Also discussed was the postponed Syosset Chamber Golf Outing, highlighting the charity organization, Long Island Cancer Care. The outing was scheduled for May 15 but due to rain, the event has been rescheduled for Tuesday, Oct. 10 at the Town of Oyster Bay Golf Course. Those players who were postponed originally are on schedule to play on the new October date. In addition, anyone who was not scheduled to play on the original date, (a Monday), will be welcome. Contact the Syosset Chamber office, at 364-7150 for further information on either event.
The meeting's scheduled speaker, Edward W. Gordon discussed 401ks for small business owners. He touched on a number of financial points, such as "pay yourself first," meaning to save money, but to make it appear as paying a bill that must be paid. After a while, it will become, "business as usual" and will pay off financially over the years, especially for retirement.
He also mentioned that the right life insurance can be a vehicle for retirement.
Gordon recommended a book on finances Perfectly Legal by David Cay Johnston.
Syosset Chamber monthly meetings start at 6 p.m. and food is served. From 6 to 6:30 p.m. the meeting is open for networking and gathering and at 6:30 p.m. there will be a guest speaker. The meeting will usually adjourn when the speaker has finished.
