Former Knicks star, John Starks, came to Glenwood Landing Elementary School last month to help elementary and middle school children raise money for victims of the Gulf Coast hurricanes. The school chose the children's charity Save the Children to disseminate the money to the areas where it is needed most.

Glenwood Landing school teacher, Joe Melillo, organized the event which raised $1,515 in less than an hour. Melillo said, "John Starks is an acquaintance of mine and I knew he would come and help us out." Starks signed autographs and had his picture taken with kids from both the elementary and middle schools. It was suggested those attending donate $10.

Save the Children's Gloria Kruse said, "It's so important that schools teach children to take action when they see help is so desperately needed".

The event also featured a $5 a ticket raffle in which the winner got a New York Islander jersey signed by the entire team.

Earlier this year, North Shore schools raised $20,000 to help victims of last year's tsunami.
