Residents for a More Beautiful Syosset, which was founded over eight years ago to beautify and improve safety in Syosset through the efforts of residents, business owners and local elected officials, was the victim of recent vandalism.

The group was responsible for turning a utility strip on Jackson Avenue, located across the street from St Edward's Church, into a community garden. The garden, which was created and maintained by funds the group both raised and had donated, was designed by a landscape architect to include perennial flowers that bloom throughout the season. The community donated money and time to beautify the garden and downtown Syosset.

Last month, the Residents for a More Beautiful Syosset community garden sign was damaged beyond repair. According to Lorraine Donlon, from the Residents group, vandals smashed the sign to pieces and there are no known witnesses and no tire tracks.

The garden was planted by volunteers and is maintained weekly by membership dues and contributions. Estimated costs to replace the sign are approximately $2,000. The residents group would appreciate any contributions and all donations are tax deductible. Checks should be made out to Residents for a More Beautiful Syosset and mailed to PO BOX 446, Syosset, NY 11791
