Congressman Steve Israel (D-Huntington), recently presented a Bronze Star to a local World War II and Korean veteran.
Syosset resident Julius Brandi joined the New York National Guard on July 9, 1940. Brandi decided to join Officer Candidate School and graduated on August 13, 1943.
Brandi was assigned to the 106th Infantry Division and was sent overseas in January 1944. He fought the Battle of Normandy, France at St. Lo. Brandi was discharged in 1946, but was recalled November 5, 1950 to participate in the Korean War.
"Like so many men and women of his generation Julius Brandi didn't expect anything in return for his service to our country. But he deserves our thanks and appreciation for all he did in uniform. With this medal, he is finally being recognized for his heroism in defending his country," said Israel.
In addition to his Bronze Star, Israel assisted him in obtaining the following medals: Combat Infantryman Badge 1st Award, Good Conduct Medal, American Defense Service Medal, American Campaign Medal, European-African-Middle Eastern Campaign Medal with Bronze service stars, World War II Victory Medal, Army of Occupation Medal with Germany clasp, National Defense Service Medal, Honorable Service Lapel Button WW II and the Sharpshooter Badge with Rifle Bar.
The Bronze Star is awarded for heroic or meritorious achievement of service.
