On a cool spring evening at Merry Lane, the Robin Hood Athletics narrowly defeated the Stasi Brothers Cardinals by a score of 4-3 in a well-played pitcher's duel where several pitchers came up big for their respective teams. The Athletics used the triumvirate of Jonathan Davis, Leo Wiener and Justin Mintz, while the Cardinals received excellent pitching from Randy Liebowitz and Jeffrey Goren.
The Cardinals took an early 2-0 lead in the top of the first inning, highlighted by an RBI double by Jeffrey Goren. The Athletics, however, then took the lead in the bottom of the second inning on consecutive hits by Ari Freedman, Justin Mintz, Jared Oxenberg and Zachary Kent, the last of which put the Athletics ahead to stay. The Cardinals threatened in the third inning, but excellent relief pitching by Leo Weiner kept the Athletics in front. They also threatened in the top of the fourth inning when Adam Birns led off the inning with a huge hit off the fence in right field, which could have been a home run if not for an excellent throw in right field by Reggie Kronstadt to hold the runner to a triple. Wiener then settled down and struck out the side to preserve the lead.
Justin Mintz single-handedly gave the Athletics an insurance run in the bottom of the fourth inning, when he walked, stole two bases and came home on an errant throw. Mintz also took the mound in the top of the sixth. Tyler Russell led off the inning with a line shot down the left field line which had extra base hit written all over it, until Matt Kent came to the rescue and made a sensational catch. The catch proved to be the winning play, as it was followed by a triple by Jeffrey Goren, who eventually scored to cut the lead to 4-3. However, Justin got the last two outs to earn the save for the Athletics. The game ball went to Matt Kent for his great catch in left field, but also could easily have gone to Brandon Dorman, who put forth another steady game behind the plate in catching the three pitchers and keeping the Cardinal runners at bay.
