Three Jericho sixth graders, Amanda Epstein, Taylor Katz, and Scott Freudenthal, were recently selected to participate in the New York State Olympic Developmental Program (ODP) sponsored by the Eastern New York Youth Soccer Association. Amanda, Taylor, and Scott were among the 73 soccer players chosen in the 1993 age group from an initial pool of approximately 320 top players from the lower New York region, including Nassau and Suffolk counties, and the five boroughs of New York City. It is rare for three players from the same town in the same age group to be selected for ODP, and the small size of the Jericho community makes this feat even more noteworthy.
Separate tryouts for the boys and girls teams were held at several area locations, including Stony Brook University, Mitchell Field, and the Verrazzano Complex. Players were rated on their performance in a variety of drills and scrimmages throughout the tryout process. After each round, the girls chosen to advance to the next tryout were notified by mail, whereas the boys were apprised of their standing in person right on the field. Amanda and Taylor were selected for the ODP after three challenging tryouts, while Scott was informed of his selection after four arduous rounds. Although the girls and boys will practice separately, both teams will get to participate in elite training, premier tournaments, and mini camps throughout the winter, spring and summer.
The Jericho trio pursued many activities over the years to hone their soccer skills. From a young age, each player participated in developmental programs outside the community. They joined spring leagues, registered for training camps, and participated in competitive tournaments both on and off Long Island. Currently, all three players participate in travel soccer in the Long Island Junior Soccer League. Amanda plays center midfield for the Syosset Invasion, Taylor plays striker for the Ronkonkoma Rage, and Scott plays striker for the Hicksville Strikers. The hard work and training has certainly paid off, and all three are looking forward to their experiences in ODP and should be congratulated for their accomplishment.
