The Home Depot opened its newest store, located at 111 Jericho Turnpike in Syosset on Thursday morning. The new store features a modern floor plan, with newly designed departments such as a special home décor section, more than 35,000 products, tool rental services, an expansive outdoor garden area and a contractor services desk. On August 6, a pet dog killed a raccoon in Brookville. The raccoon was collected by a wildlife trapper, taken to a local animal hospital and shipped to the New York State Department of Health laboratory for testing. On August 9th, the New York State Department of Health informed the Nassau County Department of Health that the raccoon found in the county tested positive for raccoon rabies. All those who came in direct contact with the raccoon have been advised to get post-exposure treatment. The pet dog had been vaccinated against rabies and will get a booster vaccination. FULL STORY

Tryouts for the Fall SYAC U12 Travel Softball Program are announced. Tryout sessions for this girls softball program, which involves mostly Sunday games in September through early November, are slated for the following four dates: Monday, August 23; Wednesday, August 25; Tuesday, August 31, and Thursday, September 2.
