Jericho Jaysox started play in the most prestigious summer tournament on Long Island in Plainedge this weekend. Sixteen 10-and-under teams began competition. Jericho's first opponent was East Meadow American. Jericho defeated them 6-4 with strong pitching from 8-year-old Michael Goren while Sean Lohan closed the door on any comeback in relief. Goren pitched four innings of one-run ball in front of scouts from the Yankees and Red Sox who were looking for a pitcher before the trade deadline. Fortunately, Michael will be staying with Jericho.
The offense was provided by Zach Kent 2/2 with a double. Stephen Watt 1/1 with two walks and two stolen bases and Lohan 2/3 with one double. Corey Boico and Dustin Sheinberg also reached base. Terrific fielding plays were made by first baseman Lohan, second baseman Glen Hyams and Steven Pestyner, shortstop Mattew Damon, centerfielder Adam Birns and catcher Andrew Weiss, who held East Meadow to four stolen bases, throwing out one runner at third and tagging out a runner trying to score to end the game.
In the second game, Jericho flexed its muscle against Baldwi, belting out 13 hits in 27 at-bats. Tyler Russell, the ultimate lead-off hitter, went 3 for 4 with two doubles. Michael Goren went 2/4, Stephen Watt went 2/3 with a double. Sean Lohan, a future contender for Henry Aaron's home run record, almost hit for the cycle with a single, double and triple. Glen Hyams went 2/3 with four stolen bases and Andrew Weiss went 1/2 and pitched two innings of two-run baseball. The team also turned a 6-4-2 double play between Goren, Hyams and Weiss.
