Another rainy week had the girls from SYAC Softball looking for any opportunity to swing their bats. A few games were played despite the general sogginess.
Mudd Girls Edge Paston Insurance 7-3
In a very closely played game on May 27, the Mudd Girls were able to hold onto their early lead to beat Paston Insurance by a score of 7 to 3. Pitching for Paston Insurance the first five innings and only allowing six runs was Jennifer Zink. Coming in for the sixth inning was Olivia Faden, who allowed only one run.
Shelby Rosen pitched a brilliant three innings for The Mudd Girls, allowing no runs. Natalie Taback and Jordan Fontini pitched the fourth and fifth inning, allowing three runs before Shelby came back in to close out the game.
The Mudd Girls offense was fueled by Robyn Banks, who hit a double and a triple; Brittany Girolamo, who hit a single and a double and scored two runs; and Jordan Fontini, who hit two singles and a double.
The Access Tigers proved that "hitting is contagious," with a 19-hit breakout that left the Grand Slammers on the losing side of an 18-2 contest on May 30.
The Tigers' hits came in bunches, and leading the attack was Zoe Saunders, who claimed two doubles and a triple among her four hits, while contributing a season-high seven RBIs on the night. Heather Kwiatkowski, Lindsay Pearlman and Lily Mummert had three hits each, while Lauren Gershowitz and Emily Wagner contributed a pair apiece. Emily also had the distinction of stroking two hits in the Tigers' six-run third inning. Allison Kamin and Jessie Weinstein also contributed to the Tigers' offensive onslaught.
Leading the offense for the Grand Slammers were Dana Singer, Amanda Kaplan and Lexi Tick, who delivered a two-run smash to the outfield in the third inning.
Holding the Grand Slammers to just three hits were Tigers pitchers Lily Mummert and Zoe Saunders, who divided four innings on the mound.
The Tigers played tight defensively. Heather Kwiatkowski made several sparkling plays at first base, and Lindsay Pearlman was steady behind the plate. Zoe Saunders hauled in several pop-ups while pitching.
