The Syosset Power (U-11 girls) salvaged the final game of the Memorial Day Pocono Challenge Cup Soccer Tournament with hard-fought 2-2 tie against the Babylon Bengals. The Power played four games over the two-day tournament, which took place in between persistent rainstorms at the foot of green Pennsylvania mountains that were shrouded in fog.
In the final game of the tournament, the Bengals scored an early goal that was answered right back by Syosset. Melanie Woerner took a beautiful cross pass from Rachel Franklin to even the score 1-1 before the halftime break.
Babylon scored again in the second half, but once more Syosset evened matters quickly. Kristen Carton lifted a high chip shot into the back of the net, on another assist from Rachel Franklin. Syosset goalie Taylor Tully made several great saves on the wet turf to maintain the score through the end of the game.
The Power showed a gutsy team effort throughout the tournament, which featured some fine teams from Pennsylvania, New Jersey and New York. For Syosset, a great effort was also shown by team members Julie Baharestani, Jenna Chimon, Olivia DeLisa, Nicole Imundo, Lily Mummert, Tina Prestano, Lauren Quinn, Heidi Smolevitz and Ally Zuckerman (who scored a goal in the second game). Syosset Power is coached by Mary O'Roarke.
