There was no band or even a drumbeat to keep the marchers in step, but that and the rain didn't stop the Memorial Day festivities in Syosset - the parade went on as planned. The streets weren't as crowded as in years past, but dedicated local residents were still showing their support.

The dedicated marchers followed a shortened parade route. According to Parade Coordinator Gus Scutari, many people said to him that if the soldiers can fight in bad weather, they could march in the rain.
"I noticed that the people were smiling and happy and not gloomy," said Scutari who marched in the parade with his wife Fran Scutari. "Everyone who marched - their spirits were all up. They acted like it was a sunny day. We decided that if we didn't have music or a drum beat, we would sing the songs."
After the parade, there was a ceremony at the monuments. Scott Glasgow, a resident of Syosset, said the Pledge of Allegiance and Rev. James Anderson said the opening prayer at the ceremony. Father Tom Fusco from St. Edward's was also present at the ceremonies. Michael Owczar, commander of the American Legion, also spoke to those in attendance. Robert Brown, a major in National Guard, called the cadence and led the parade. Anthony Bellafiore delighted the audience and sang God Bless America.
After the festivities, residents went to the American Legion, this year's host, and enjoyed refreshments as they dried off.
Scutari thanked all that attended, marched, helped and watched including the police department.
