The Jericho third and fourth grade and the fifth and sixth grade travel lacrosse teams headed down 107 North to Glen Cove stadium on Sunday morning, May 4 to face off against the Glen Cove teams. These two communities have played some close matches over the past few years and this game on the first Sunday in May was no different. Actually both games were extremely similar as the offensive momentum shifted between teams after the half time breaks, but the Jericho defenses prevailed to secure two Jericho victories on this exciting day of lacrosse.
The third and fourth grade team stepped on the Glen Cove field first at 9 a.m. After the coaches completed their opening motivational speeches, the players positioned themselves on the field and Jericho took command of the play early. The opening faceoff was won by the Jericho midfield of Sean Lohan, Cory Bogdan, and Jordan Brett and they quickly moved the ball up to the attack team. Eric Zwilling fired the ball past the Glen Cove goaltender and scored the first goal of the game and Jericho took a 1-0 lead. Glen Cove bounced back quickly and tied the game at 1-1. Soon after the game was tied up, Jericho continued forcing the play back into the attack zone and jumped out to a 5 to 1 lead. The additional goals for the game came from shots that were pumped into the opponent's goal by the sticks of Jesse Chazen, Jacob Entel, Cory Bogdan, and Sean Lohan.
The Jericho victory came about due to a total commitment to team defense. Defensive play was sparked by the sharp Jericho goaltenders, Matt Roberts in the first half and Cory Bogdan in the second half. Both goaltenders were outstanding protecting the goal for Jericho. Matt Roberts' performance has earned him the role of a team captain for this week's game. The entire defensive unit was sharp and played many minutes in a man down situation due to Jericho penalties in the second half. The attack units also demonstrated smart defensive plays while stopping the Glen Cove defense from clearing the ball in multiple situations in the second half. Although Glen Cove battled hard in the second half to make the score closer, Jericho went on to win the game 7 to 5.
At 11 a.m. the fifth and sixth grade squads joined together and once again, Jericho took control of the game early. Jake Weithorn, Scott Weiss, and Jimmy Corcoran forced the play into the Jericho attack zone and Jake Weithorn blazed a goal past a tough Glen Cove goaltender. Jericho took a 4 to 0 lead in the first half, as goals were added by Daniel Benisatto, Michael Solomon, and Scott Weiss on a beautiful feed from Austin Landow on a man up penalty situation.
The defense was strong as Ben Ehrlich, Stephen Platz, Brendan Cacciola, Thomas Caruso, and Marshall Hockhauser protected the second half goalie Jared Lyons. Jared showed extreme courage as he kicked out a hard shot off his foot to save a goal early in the second half, shook off the pain, and jumped right back into the net to fight off a strong Glen Cove come back in the second half. Michael Solomon played a strong game up and down the field and Reed Longo never quit as he continued to dig out ground balls and dump the ball to his teammates. Michael Leprine also had a very strong game moving between defense and midfield. Jericho held on to win 6 to 5 as Glen Cove scored the final goal of the game as time ran out.
Both Jericho teams are back on the home field this Sunday, May 11 looking to win one for mom, as New Hyde Park comes to town to play the traditional Mother's Day game at the Jericho High School. Please come out and support the teams. Happy Mother's Day to all on behalf of the Jericho Lacrosse Club.
