When Kmart's Syosset location announced its bankruptcy status and plans to close earlier this year, local residents started to discuss what might occupy the 117,000-square-foot location on Jericho Turnpike. Most recently, it has been rumored that Home Depot would be the newest addition to Syosset.

In a recent phone interview, a spokesperson for Home Depot said he had no knowledge of Home Depot coming to Syosset. "We do not have a final order on anything and this is not a deal yet," he said.

He explained that Home Deport, Kohl's and Wal-Mart have joined together to take over many of the Kmart leases. Kmart Corporation announced earlier this year that it intends to close 326 under-performing stores as part of its chapter 11 financial objectives review.

Home Depot petitioned the Town of Oyster Bay Board in 2001 to build a store on Sunnyside Boulevard in Plainview. Many residents expressed their opinions at a public hearing regarding a Home Depot coming to Plainview and many didn't see the need with the Jericho location so close.
