Members of the Jericho School community gathered together in the auditorium at the Jericho Public Library on March 20 to honor five graduates of Jericho High School. Their accomplishments, both impressive and varied, were celebrated at the 13th annual Jericho Alumni Hall of Fame Induction Ceremony.

Edward Mardovich, a graduate of the class of 1977, had a very successful career as a securities broker until the time of his death on September 11 when the World Trade Center was destroyed. He was the president of both Eurobrokers and Maxcor, and was appointed to serve as the chairman of the Bond Market Association. Although Mardovich was extremely busy with his career, he still found time to be an active supporter of the New York Institute of the Handicapped, specifically for the blind.

He was also an "Inner Circle" member of the Make-A-Wish Foundation of Metro New York. Family and friends were on hand as Mardovich's four children accepted the Hall of Fame plaque on their father's behalf.

As the director of consumer bank programs, Jennifer Armstrong, acts as a liaison for most senior management at Citicorp. In this marketing and customer service business, Armstrong is involved in many community activities and champions a variety of tough issues, such as financial education and equal credit scoring for women-owned businesses. Armstrong, a graduate of the class of 1968, has always been concerned about women and their position in the workplace. As a member of the board of directors for the New York Women's Agenda, she represents over 93,000 women in New York City. In this position, her major focus is to educate the public and advise policy makers about the impact of public policy decisions on the welfare of women and families. Armstrong is also the co-chairwoman of the Women's Agenda's Arts and Cultural Committee, and an active member of Welfare to Work and Dress for Success.

Joel Flatow, a graduate of the class of 1982, acted as a legislative assistant and later as the Legislative Director of the Congressional Arts Caucus, one of Capitol Hill's largest and most active bipartisan legislative service organizations. He also served as special assistant to Senator Daniel Patrick Moynihan in 1989. While in Washington, Flatow performed as a tenor with the Washington Opera at the Kennedy Center. In 1995, Flatow became the director of Government Affairs for the Recording Industry Association of America, the trade association that represents the U.S. recording industry. In this position, Flatow promoted laws to protect recording artists and the music community. He is currently the general manager of west coast affairs and senior vice president for Artist and Industry relations for RIAA. Flatow's service to the community involves his devotion to music and music education. He is on the boards of The Society of Singers, Step Up, and The Washington Area Music Association.

As a practicing attorney, Wendy Schack represents the interests of minor children. For over 10 years, she has been an advocate for the welfare of minor children in custody litigation and juvenile proceedings in the Family Court of Nassau County. Her legal expertise is valuable in helping the community to protect children who are caught in difficult and often combative situations. Schack, a graduate of 1976, also donates much of her time and energy to the Make-A-Wish Foundation, Literacy Volunteers, and Meals-On-Wheels.

A graduate of the class of 1974, Paul Pellicoro is a world-class competitor in international dance competitions and a ballroom dance instructor. As the most famous teacher of Argentina tango in the U.S., Pellicoro taught Al Pacino the tango for his Oscar-winning performance in Scent of a Woman. He has also tutored Robert DeNiro, Richard Gere, Sigourney Weaver, Anthony LaPaglia, and Robert Duvall.

DanceSport, which he opened in the mid-1980s, is currently the largest and most famous ballroom and Latin Dance Studio in the U.S. His book, Paul Pellicoro on Tango, has been reviewed as the "definitive guide to tango." Together with his partner, Pellicoro founded the DanceSport Youth Program. This program is dedicated to teaching children partner dancing with the goal of providing young people with an opportunity to gain insights into other cultures, boost self-esteem, and help them feel comfortable in social and cultural settings.

The varied achievements of this distinguished group of inductees represents the essence of the Jericho Alumni Hall of Fame. Success can be measured in many different ways and the Jericho High School Alumni Hall of Fame encourages and celebrates that diversity.
