In a see saw battle that could have gone either way, the Cardinal Products Sol defeated the Andrew Marc Monarchs in overtime, 19-17. The game was decided by Alyssa Birbach's basket with 40 seconds left in the first overtime. The Monarchs had a chance to tie but aggressive defense by the Sol along with slick ball-handling by Rachelle Blidner iced the victory.
The Sol were led by Michelle Fusco's 6 points while Jessica Graff led the Monarchs with 6.
The Monarchs took an early 7-4 lead after one period led by Allison Gluck's 3 points and Julie Gold's and Abby Wank's 2 each. They appeared to be running away with it as they built that lead up to 7 points with minutes to go in the first half. The Sol came alive with a 6-0 run behind buckets from Fusco, Dana Miccio and Cara Alpert to go into halftime behind by only one point, 11-10. Gluck led all scorers at the half with 5 points. Miccio had 4 for the Sol.
Aggressive defense from Blidner, Alpert, Rebecca Shinners, Rachel Rothstein and clutch rebounding from Miccio kept it close at the end of 3 quarters as the Monarchs took a 13-11 lead into the final 8 minutes of regulation.
Fusco came alive in the final period with 4 points before fouling out. The period ended with the game tied 17-17. The only basket in the 2 minute overtime was Birbach's game winner.
Graff finishd the game with 6 points for the Monarchs. Other Monarchs scorers included Gluck with 5 and Danielle Schwartz, Julie Gold and Abby Wank with 2 each. Fusco finished with 6 for the Sol while Rachel Rothstein and Dana Miccio had 4 each, Cara Alpert had 3 and Alyssa Birbach had 2--the game winner.
