Jessica Lebovits' winning basket in overtime led a depleted Woodbury Common's Mystics team to a 19-15 win against the Starzz on March 8 at Cantiague gym. Due to injuries and an NCAA investigation, the Mystics played the game with only five players. These fabulous five gave 100 percent team effort with their passing, defending, rebounding and clutch scoring.

The Starzz were led by scoring of Stacey Stern, 14 points, and Hillary Kewsner, 1 point and the ball handling and harassing defense of Cori Goodman. The Mystics fab five, who played the entire game, never gave up. Rachel Rosner, had another strong game with 6 points, Samantha Gordon and Sanchita Menra, with their best overall games of the season, 4 points and 7 points respectively; Jamie Scheinthal, who seemed to come up with every basket and loose ball and rebound and Jessica Lebovits, who scored the wining basket and had a strong game defensively by holding the Starzz to few opportunities.

Ten different players scored in a spirited Jericho Athletic Association 5th and 6th grade girls' basketball game at Cantiague School on March 8. The advantages of a full season playing together were evident on both sides as the Andrew Marc Monarchs survived a late surge by the Goldstein & Avrutine Lynx to win 31-26.

The Monarchs maintained a small lead all game (2 after one, 6 at the half, and 2 at the three-quarter mark). Teamwork and passing were the standard for playmakers Alison Gluck (4 points) and Danielle Schwartz (9). They spread the ball to Amy Ballin (4) and Julie Gold (2) and helped Jessica Graf reach a double-double (12 points, 10 rebounds). The feisty play of Pamela Bortnick at both ends led a deep bench as Abby Wank, Chelsea Kutner, and Carolyn Bordowitz kept the Monarchs fresh through the frantic fourth quarter.

Melanie Checkla (10 points) and Bari Herling (8) would not let the Lynx get out of striking distance the entire game. Checkla was outstanding on defense as well, stripping several Monarchs of the ball. Danielle Margolies (4), Jordan Levenstein, Kimberly Schwarcz (2), and Julie Avrutine (2) all made key contributions to the Lynx offensive effort.

A stifling press by the Lynx in the last four minutes featured clutch shooting by Checkla and tight defense from Avrutine and Schwarcz. Gold grabbed a hotly contested inbounds pass for the Monarchs who, led by Gluck, weathered the charge. Leading by two with under a minute left, Danielle Schwartz was fouled by Checkla and converted a three-point play. Checkla fouled out on the play, and the Lynx could not recover from the deficit.
